How a sustainable project must consider shielding materials and design.

Shields for low-frequency electromagnetic fields serve the same purpose, but they are not necessarily all the same. They are used to ensure the proper functioning of electronic devices and to protect people from electromagnetic emissions, but their effectiveness depends on the material they are made with. So does their sustainability!

If you are developing a sustainable project in the rail, electric mobility, or construction sectors, it is crucial that all components are sustainable.

Definition of sustainable development

“ensuring that the needs of the current generation are met without compromising the ability of future generations to achieve their own ones”

Rapporto Bruntland, “Our common future” (1987)

What do we mean by “sustainable shielding”?

For an EMC/EMC shielding to be called sustainable, it is essential that three basic and interdependent requirements, namely economic, environmental, and social are met:

  1. from an economic point of view, it must be capable of improving the efficiency and effectiveness of products and processes by creating value;
  2. from a social point of view, it must be capable of protecting people’s health from continuous and prolonged exposure to electromagnetic emissions thus improving quality of living;
  3. from an environmental point of view, it must be environmentally sustainable and made with recyclable materials, contributing to the reduction of pollutant emissions.

Example of a sustainable project in the rail sector: hydrogen trains

In the rail sector, hydrogen trains (or Hydrail) are the nearest future of sustainable transportation: a true alternative to diesel convoys that will enable zero-emission mobility.

In hydrail, the hydrogen cell converts chemical energy into electricity: the combination of hydrogen and oxygen produces electricity, heat, and water so when in operation the train releases only water vapor and condensate.

We have already developed and manufactured low-frequency electromagnetic shielding for the hydrail: properly shielded hydrogen trains can guarantee both zero carbon and zero electromagnetic emissions.

Our SKUDOTECH® shielding technology is designed to be not simply “environmentally friendly” but totally sustainable, therefore it can be used and applied to all sectors that develop projects that focus on sustainability:

  • it is made of 100% recyclable material that is easy to separate, process and reuse;
  • it lowers low-frequency electromagnetic fields by more than 99%, drastically reducing electromagnetic emissions to protect people;
  • dà valore aggiunto ai prodotti in termini di corretto funzionamento, di sicurezza e di tutela della salute.
